4-H DEPARTMENT
4-H is a voluntary, informal, educational program for boys
and girls in the 3rd grade to 19 years of age. Age divisions: JUNIOR:Grades 3-5, INTERMEDIATE:
Grades 6-8, SENIOR: Grades 9-12. The program is sponsored by the Cooperative Extension Service of the State
of Washington, Idaho, Oregon and Montana and conducted locally by the County/Area Cooperative Extension Service in cooperation
with over 5,000 volunteer leaders.
There are over 93,000 4-H members in Washington and over 7.5 million
members in the United States. Activities center around the interest of the individuals with their projects
as a fundamental basis of 4-H.
Projects exhibited at fairs and livestock shows by 4-H members are a direct demonstration
of the work designed to illustrate the value of that particular 4-H program to the members. To facilitate
this individual 4-H effort, each 4-H club or group is under the direction of one or more local volunteer adult men and women
who serve as 4-H leaders.
FFA DEPARTMENT
The FFA Department is a national organization of boys and girls
enrolled in Agricultural Education classes. The local unit is the Chapter in each school offering vocational
education, under the supervision of the agricultural teacher who is always the local Chapter Advisor. The
state unit includes all Chapters in the State, under the supervision of the State Department of Education. The
program includes the improvement of agriculture leading ultimately to the ownership of the farms and the development of good
rural citizenship. Participation in fairs and livestock shows is recognized as having educational value
as well as stimulation for better results and fine projects, under supervision of the qualified Chapter Advisor and with the
cooperation of the Show management.
